  • Lex Tutor: Concordancer
  • A concordancer is a type of search engine that looks for particular words. It looks through a large body of texts, called a corpus, and lists every single example of the word. It allows you to see how the word is used in context and what other words are used with it. For example, if you type in the noun gap, you can see that the verbs fill, close and bridge all collocate with it. Lex Tutor gives you a good opportunity to practise how to use concordancers and experiment with different words.

  • British Council: Teaching English: Concordancers
  • This link from the British Council website gives you more information on concordancers, how to use them and how they can help you.

  • OneLook Dictionary Search
  • This site is particularly useful for finding words that collocate or are related. It also has a 'reverse dictionary' function (if you know the definition but not the word) and can search for words that you are not sure how to spell.
